RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - The West Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA Jabar) has announced plans to gradually translocate protected and endemic animals from the Bandung Zoo to nearby conservation institutions. This move is a contingency plan to ensure the animals' safety and welfare if a new management team for the zoo is not established soon.

Head of the Technical Division at BBKSDA Jabar, Andri Hansen Siregar, explained that the priority is the rescue of protected species. The goal is to move them to facilities that possess specialized competency in handling specific types of wildlife.

"The first step is to rescue protected animals to specific and general conservation institutions nearby that have the competence in handling animals more specifically," Hansen said in Bandung on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The Ministry of Forestry’s Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) has already inventoried several potential new homes for the animals. These include specialized rescue centers for primates, large mammals, and carnivores.

The selected institutions have undergone a rigorous evaluation process to ensure they meet high standards of management. According to Hansen, the translocation process has received formal approval from the Ministry of Forestry, and the team is currently awaiting technical instructions for field execution.

In addition to the zoo's permanent residents, BBKSDA noted that several animals currently housed at Bandung Zoo are actually on loan from other conservation centers. Since the cooperation agreements for these animals expired in 2024, their return is considered urgent.

"Those deposited animals should have returned to their original institutions. This is also our concern to immediately translocate them," Hansen added. ***
