RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), as a stakeholder and policymaker in the marine and fisheries sector and the competent authority (CA) for fish-based food in Indonesia, is committed to ensuring the quality and safety of fishery products. One way to do this is through synergy with the Indonesian Police (Polri) to control the quality of fishery products from radioactive contamination.

The Head of the Marine and Fisheries Product Quality Control and Supervision Agency, Ishartini, stated that radioactive scanning and detection are useful for monitoring radioactive contamination throughout the fishery production chain. "The KKP Quality Agency has collaborated with the Polri, which oversees the Gegana unit, which has expertise in radionuclide removal and detection," Ishartini said in Jakarta on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

She also explained that the cooperation agreement between the Polri and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is considered strategic because it supports the radioactive-free certification scheme for fishery products to protect the health of the Indonesian public. She was also committed to ensuring the acceptability of Indonesian fishery products exported to 147 countries.

In addition, Ishartini emphasized that the cross-sector synergy she has implemented with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has succeeded in convincing the international community that Indonesia's fishery products are safe from radioactive contamination. She explained that one indication of this is the resumption of Indonesia's shrimp exports to the United States (US).

The radioactive-free certification was first launched from October 31, 2025, to April 20, 2026. During that period, Indonesia shipped 3,202 containers of shrimp worth over IDR 8 trillion, with 2,462 of these containers entering the United States (US) market.

Previously, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, consistently affirmed that quality assurance is key to the acceptance of fishery products in the global market. According to him, the majority of consumers prefer products that are high-quality and safe to consume, as well as meeting strict standards from the export destination countries.
