  • Greater Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung ordered citywide operations to remove suckermouth catfish from waterways to protect local ecosystem.
  • Local authorities warned that unchecked growth of the fish can lead to structural damage of embankments and disrupt aquatic life.

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has directed officials across the capital to carry out large-scale removal of Suckermouth catfish, locally known as sapu-sapu, an invasive species that has spread widely in the city’s waterways and is seen as a threat to local ecosystems.

“I have asked that operations be conducted not only in Central Jakarta but in all areas where sapu-sapu populations are high,” Governor Pramono said during a press briefing at the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Sunday, April 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The initiative follows earlier cleanup efforts in Central Jakarta, particularly in canals near Grand Hyatt and Plaza Indonesia. The operations involved the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office, the city’s Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP), and public infrastructure officers (PPSU).

Pramono noted that while the initial effort was only a start, it has already shown positive impact. He warned that unchecked growth of sapu-sapu fish could damage embankments and disrupt aquatic ecosystems. “If immediate action is not taken, the rising number of sapu-sapu will certainly affect our ecosystem,” he said.

KPKP Head Hasudungan A. Sidabalok explained that the problem is not new, recalling similar efforts to control sapu-sapu in the Ciliwung River. Once captured, the fish are sent to the Fishery Inspection and Certification Production Center (PPISHP) in Ciganjur. Dead specimens are buried, as the species is known for its resilience and ability to survive even outside water if not properly disposed of.

The city hopes that coordinated cleanups will help restore balance to Jakarta’s waterways while preventing further ecological damage. ***
