RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indoneisa's Minister of the Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, affrimed the acceleration of the development of Waste-to-Electricity Processing Facilities (PSEL) in the Greater Pekanbaru area. This step is a follow-up to the President's directive to transform the national waste management system.

As quoted by the official website kemenlh.go.id on 7 April 2026, following the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between the Riau Provincial Government and five regional governments, the collaboration involves the city of Pekanbaru as well as the regencies of Pelalawan, Siak, Kampar, and Bengkalis.

The Minister further explained that this agreement marks an important milestone in resolving administrative aspects and technical requirements for physical development. The local government is committed to aligning waste management as the main raw material to be converted into electrical energy.

"This signing is the first step toward real implementation on the ground for a long-term solution. I emphasize that all parties ensure the obligations in this agreement are carried out consistently," Minister Hanif conveyed.

Technically, the PSEL Pekanbaru Raya is designed to have a waste processing capacity of 1,215 tons per day. This project is expected to optimize the national waste management target, which is aimed to reach 63.41 percent by 2026.

Furthermore, Minister Hanif reminded the need for a paradigm shift from the collect-dispose system to environmentally friendly technology. He underscored that landfills should no longer be the main reliance, but rather just a place for final waste disposal.

Meanwhile, Acting Governor of Riau, S.F Hariyanto, stated the full readiness of his staff in supporting the operations of PSEL to address the waste problem in the region.

"With the presence of this PSEL, we hope that the waste problem in our area can be resolved. The Riau Provincial Government is fully ready to support this program," he said.
