RRI.CO.ID, Batang - The rushing waters of the Kecepak irrigation canal became a theater of joy on Monday as the annual Langenan Ban competition returned to Batang Regency, Central Java. A signature event of the Syawalan festivities, the race, which involves participants paddling through the river atop rubber inner tubes, drew hundreds of residents and returning "mudik" travellers to compete for high-stakes prizes under the afternoon sun.

This year’s event saw a record-breaking 300 participants, all eyeing the grand prize of two live goats. Beyond the livestock, donors and local sponsors provided millions of rupiah in cash and various electronic appliances to those who successfully crossed the finish line.

Organized by the local community, the event serves a purpose deeper than mere entertainment. Muhammad Nasrul Fajar, a member of the organizing committee, emphasized that the race is a strategic tool for environmental education, particularly for the younger generation.

“In addition to enlivening the Syawalan event, Langenan Ban also serves as an educational medium for children to protect the Kecepak River environment, which is an irrigation flow,” said Nasrul on Monday, March 23, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

He added that the committee constantly encourages the youth to keep the waters clean. “We always invite children to protect the environment by not throwing trash in the river, ” he added.

The festivities also acted as an economic catalyst for the village. Local MSMEs and seasonal vendors lined the riverbanks, selling traditional snacks and vintage toys to the crowds of spectators.

"What is clear is that many sudden traders joined in to rake in profits, we are collectively reviving water tourism potential while boosting the local economy," Nasrul explained.

For returning residents like Nisa, who has lived in Tangerang for three years, the event is a source of hometown pride. Having won a fan in last year’s race, she returned this year with her husband, Rifa'i, hoping for the top prize.

“Last year I joined Langenan Ban and, thank God, got a fan; this year I want to join again to get the goat prize,” she shared.

The competitive spirit was perhaps highest among the children. Kaka, a young local who took third place last year, returned with his friends, driven by a very specific goal for the grand prize.

“Last year I got a 150-thousand rupiah cash prize for third place; this year I’m joining again to be first and get the goat, to make satay,” he said with a grin.

As the Syawalan week continues, the Langenan Ban Kecepak stands as a testament to how traditional play can be repurposed to protect natural resources and unite a community. ***
