RRI.CO.ID, Vienna – The Indonesian delegation introduced the Multi-Use Forestry (MUK) strategy at the Global Summit in Vienna, Austria, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. According to a press release from the Ministry of Forestry, this step was taken to show how Indonesia manages its forests to ensure their sustainability while generating economic benefits for the world.
The MUK concept is a new way of managing forests that does not focus solely on logging. Indonesia wants to prove that forests can provide broad benefits through non-timber crops, nature tourism, and environmental conservation.
Director of Forest Product Levies and Management of the Ministry, Krisdianto, explained that this regulation already has a strong legal basis. The government is using the Job Creation Law to consolidate various forest utilization permits into a single, more streamlined system.
“The benefits of forests are no longer limited to timber, but also include non-timber forest products and environmental services,” Krisdianto conveyed when delivering his report to the global delegation. This is being done so that forests can be preserved while still providing prosperity for the community.
This major meeting was opened by the Austrian Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Norbert Totschnig. He reminded the audience that forests are the key to combating climate change and building a sustainable future.
The event was attended by representatives from 60 countries and hundreds of international organizations such as the FAO and UNFF. Indonesia, along with other developed countries such as Japan and Finland, agreed that technological innovation is crucial for tracking the authenticity of forest products in the global market.
In addition to discussing the economy, the forum also highlighted the use of wood as an environmentally friendly building material and ways to seek new funding to preserve forests. The results of the discussions in Vienna will be brought to the UN high-level meeting in May 2026.
Through the event, Indonesia fostered its position as a leader in protecting the world's forests. The government hopes that this management model can serve as an example for other countries in harmonizing economic needs with nature conservation.
