RRI.CO.ID, Cikarang – Al Azhar Islamic Boarding School Foundation (YPI Al Azhar) and the Energy Charity program from MOSAIC (Muslims for Shared Action on Climate Impact) have formally synergized to accelerate the national energy transition using an ecotheology approach. It is a concept that combines religious teachings with the responsibility of environmental conservation.

They have an energy waqf program namely "Nyala Ramadan" event. In an effort to urge public participation to achieve Indonesia's target of 100 GW of renewable energy, an initiative integrating Islamic philanthropic programs was officially launched at the Gala Iftar event held at the Al Azhar Jababeka Grand Mosque, Cikarang.

Indonesia's Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, welcomed this initiative in his keynote speech. He said it is important to foster public and house of worship initiatives in realizing Indonesia's target of achieving 100 gigawatts of new and renewable energy.

"Energy waqf reminds us of the example of the Prophet's companion, Uthman bin Affan, who endowed a well and a date palm orchard. In the past, he made a waqf for water sovereignty. Now, with energy waqf, we strive for energy sovereignty. This program transforms sunlight into clean energy to power our mosques and social facilities. This is a productive asset whose proceeds will sustainably support da'wah (Islamic propagation), education, and social services," he stated, as quoted from official statement on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

Meanwhile, the Director of Zakat and Waqf Empowerment at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Waryono Abdul Ghafur, highlighted the importance of collaboration among many parties to campaign for this program.

"This energy charity needs to be campaigned for among muzaki (those who pay zakat), waqif (those who give waqf), and philanthropists. That today we can give energy charity, not only in the form of buildings. The key is that we must collaborate, and the mosque becomes a symbol that the strength of the community lies in synergy," he conveyed.

The Energy Charity program, initiated by MOSAIC, has previously mobilized more than 21,000 donors to fund the solarization of six mosques in Indonesia, which have generated 23,525 WP of power from installed solar panels. The program also trains dozens of local mosque community members to independently manage rooftop solar panel technology.

MOSAIC's Program Director, Aldy Permana, expressed optimism about the synergy with YPI Al Azhar. "What we have pioneered through Energy Charity proves the high level of public concern for climate issues. By integrating with Energy Waqf, we aim to create a larger-scale, more transparent, community-based green financing model that can replicate solarization more massively across Indonesia," he said.

Meanwhile, regarding the optimization of community assets, a board member of the Al Azhar Islamic Boarding School Foundation (YPI Al Azhar), Zahrudin Sulthani, conveyed that the utilization of solar energy is highly encouraged in Islam.

"In Islam, it is even recommended to harness energy for the benefit of humanity. This is the Qur'an's challenge to all of us. Therefore, we need to work together to utilize solar energy for the solarization of mosques to save electrical energy," he said.

The event, attended by representatives from ministries, zakat and waqf institutions, the private sector, academics, and media, also seek to collect direct participation and commitments from various parties present to fund mosque solarization projects in various regions.

The Nurul Iman Mosque in Aceh Tamiang Regency, which was affected by floods at the end of last year, will be the inaugural pilot project location realizing the synergy of these two programs.
