RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia's national film industry has grown beyond global trends, making it one of the most promising markets in Asia. This makes the Indonesian film market attractive not only to local actors but also to the international film industry.

Naswardi, the chairman of the Film Censorship Institute (LSF), said that in the midst of stagnant global film growth of around 2 percent, national films have actually recorded growth of 5-6 percent in recent years. This makes Indonesia a "big cake" being fought over by many parties.

"The foreign film market is stagnant, while Indonesia is growing. This is what makes our market attractive for both national and imported films," Naswardi said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

LSF data shows that imported films circulating in Indonesia are dominated by major countries such as the United States, South Korea, Japan, and China. This confirms Indonesia's position as a potential market and arena for competition in the global film industry.

Naswardi expressed belief that this condition presents a strategic opportunity for domestic production companies to advance. He believes that improving the quality of content and orienting it towards Asian and international markets is key to ensuring that national films are strong both at home and abroad.

The LSF also plays an active role as a facilitator by encouraging cross-border cooperation between censorship agencies, he continued. This step is expected to provide Indonesian films with wider distribution access to foreign markets.

In terms of genre trends, Indonesian cinema screens in 2025 was dominated by foreign films in the drama and action genres, with 64 titles each, followed by mystery/thrillers, animation and musicals. Meanwhile, national film production was dominated by the drama genre with 145 titles, followed by horror with 58 titles.

Apart from its supervisory function, LSF also strengthens its educational and appreciative approach. Throughout 2025, LSF held the LSF Award as a form of appreciation for film works that are deemed to comply with cultural values and censorship.

Efforts to create public awareness are also carried out through the National Independent Censorship Culture Movement (GNBSM) which reaches nearly 13 thousand pupils and students through the LSF Goes to School and LSF Goes to Campus programs. Another innovation was carried out by placing digital public service advertisements on hundreds of KRL Commuter Line carriages, which reach more than one million passengers every day.

With a combination of market growth, domestic audience dominance, and strengthening the ecosystem, LSF assesses that the national film industry is at a crucial point: not only to survive, but to determine Indonesia's position on the global film map. ***
