RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Creative Economy has affirmed its commitment to strengthening the downstream sector of the national film industry, particularly in promotion, distribution, and marketing to improve their quality and compete in the global market.
"Because the Ministry of Creative Economy concentrates more on the downstream sector, we are helping with promotions. As a result, current works are converted into high-quality, globally competitive ones," said Agustini Rahayu, Deputy for Media Creativity at the Ministry of Creative Economy, after attending a Working Committee Meeting with Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Agustini explained that by coordinating together policies from several pertinent ministries, the Ministry has also established rules for filming. In her opinion, the primary issue thus far has been the absence of clear and thorough license information.
She said that seven ministries, agencies, and organizations each have their own film-related policies. These policies are then brought together in a single, integrated information portal, she claims.
From the standpoint of a creative economy, Agustini also determined that the greatest barrier for national films is in distribution and marketing. She stressed that the Working Committee's priority is in enhancing national film distribution and innovation.
Meanwhile, Chusnunia Chalim, Deputy Chair of Commission VII of DPR RI, highlighted the limited number of screens as a major obstacle to national film distribution. He noted that despite the large number of films produced, competition between themes and audience preferences remains a real challenge.
"We met with production houses (PH), and they have a strong commitment to producing films with the highest possible quality. But market tastes tend to lean toward ghosts, pocongs, kuntilanaks, and all that stuff, more than others," she said.
Chusnunia added that most audiences tend to prefer the horror genre over other genres. She said film producers remain committed to maintaining production quality even though market tastes lean toward popular genres.
She emphasized the need to add screens in various cities to maximize the number of viewers, which continues to grow annually. He highlighted special attention to Gen Z and Gen Alpha, as their consumption tends to lean toward online video platforms.
"The challenge or opportunity is whether it's still worth pursuing. If we pay attention to Gen Z's tastes, Gen Alpha tends to lean toward video, Netflix, and so on," she said. (Misni Parjiati/Bambang MBKA)
