KBRN, Langgur: The Meti Kei Dance is more than a choreographic display. It is a celebration of togetherness and a living expression of the Kei people's cultural heritage. Indigenous to the Kei Islands in Southeast Maluku, the Kei community embodies a deep-rooted spirit of unity and reverence for nature.

Through its movements, rhythm, and the spirit of Ain Ni Ain, meaning “one heart, one feeling”. The dance symbolizes unity and identity among the Kei people as they navigate changing times.

These cultural values are at the heart of the 2025 Meti Kei Charm Festival (FPMK), held in Southeast Maluku Regency.

Fifty-two teams are set to present their most creative interpretations in the final round of the Meti Kei Dance competition, taking place at Ngursarnadan Beach in Ohoililir Village, Maluku Province, on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

FPMK Committee Chair Budi Toffi explained that this year’s competition is divided into two categories: youth and adult. The preliminary rounds were held from October 20 to 22 at two main venues: the Langgur City Landmark and Ngursarnadan Beach.

“Out of all registered participants, the jury selected 52 teams to advance to the final round, with 27 in the adult category and 25 in the youth category,” said Budi.

He noted that the entire competition ran smoothly thanks to strong collaboration and support from various stakeholders. Public enthusiasm was high, especially since all participants were exempted from registration fees.

“Teams were given full creative freedom in choreography and costume design, as long as they used the official ‘Meti Kei’ version 3 soundtrack,” he added.

Each team consisted of six to fifteen performers, with routines lasting between three and five minutes. Participants ranged in age from children and teenagers to adults, each offering a unique interpretation of this traditional Kei dance.

According to Budi, the Meti Kei Dance is a powerful way to revive local cultural values rich in meaning. It expresses joy and reverence for nature and the coastal way of life in Kei communities.

Through the Meti Kei Dance, the Kei people do more than move to the rhythm. They celebrate their identity and the spirit of gotong royong (mutual cooperation), passed down through generations.

The festival stands as proof that tradition and tourism can thrive together, strengthening local identity while drawing global attention. (Misni Parjiati/Ed. Lasti Martina)
