KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Ministry of Culture is preparing a professional certification program for ministry employees and cultural practitioners, including artists and batik artisans, in an effort to expand career opportunities and formal recognition. The initiative was announced by Deputy Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha.

“We’re currently developing a certification program. I’ll consult with the relevant team about certifying artists and batik artisans, because certification opens doors to opportunity and recognition,” Giring said after opening a batik exhibition in Jakarta on Monday, October 20, 2025, as reported by antaranews.com.

He added that the program will also apply to Ministry of Culture staff. “Here’s a preview: across the Ministry of Culture, we’ll begin requiring every employee and team member to hold a certificate,” he said.

Having worked in the music industry himself, Giring noted that he plans to pursue certification as a singer and songwriter.

The government, through the Ministry of Culture, is promoting certification for a wide range of cultural professionals, including historians and temple restorers, as a means of validating their expertise and strengthening the foundation of national culture.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized that certification is not only a matter of professional legality, but also a form of state support for cultural sustainability. “With certification, artists and cultural figures receive recognition and protection. This is essential for maintaining quality and ensuring their continued role in cultural development,” he said.

Fadli also stressed the importance of collective involvement in advancing culture, noting that the responsibility should not rest solely with the government. He cited Article 32, Paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution, which mandates the state to promote Indonesian national culture.

“The state is indeed obliged to advance our national culture, not only within Indonesia, but also on the global stage. Scientists, artists, and cultural figures must be at the forefront of this effort,” he said.

From an economic perspective, culture is also seen as a driver of public welfare. Through a culture-based economy, such as batik and other traditional crafts, communities can benefit economically while preserving their cultural identity.

The Ministry of Culture has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting cultural preservation and development through cross-sector collaboration. ***
