RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - International Podcast Day is observed every September 30 to highlight the development of podcasts as an increasingly popular form of media in the digital era. Podcasts are now available in various formats, ranging from audio programs to content that combines sound and visuals.

When podcasts first emerged, they were known as a form of “radio on demand.” Listeners could download episodes and enjoy them at any time without having to follow a radio broadcast schedule.

According to Wikipedia, a podcast is a series of digital media files published periodically or at specific times and available for download over the internet. Its formats have become increasingly diverse, with some podcasters adding visual elements for distribution across various digital platforms and social media.

The development of podcasts is closely associated with Adam Curry, a former MTV VJ, and software developer Dave Winer. The two developed a way to download online radio broadcasts to the iPod, Apple's music player introduced in 2001.

Curry and Winer used RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, together with a program called iPodder to extract audio files and transfer them to an iPod. This method allowed users to listen to programs on demand, including while traveling.

The term “podcast” itself comes from a combination of the words “iPod” and “broadcast.” Since emerging in 2004, podcasts have continued to develop and saw more rapid growth in popularity after 2014.

Growing interest in podcasts has also driven improvements in production quality and the emergence of new concepts. Podcasts are no longer limited to audio programs, but now include daily news, fictional audio dramas, video-based interview programs, and livestreams.

International Podcast Day provides an opportunity to look at how podcasts have evolved from a simple form of on-demand audio media into a digital communication format offering a wide range of options for both listeners and content creators.
