RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is strengthening collaboration between public and private universities as part of efforts to improve the quality of higher education, research, and human resource development. The initiative was highlighted during a meeting between Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto and leaders of the Association of Indonesian Private Higher Education Providers (ABPPTSI) in Jakarta on Tuesday July 28, 2026.

The meeting served as a strategic dialogue on key higher education issues, including stronger partnerships between public universities (PTNs) and private universities (PTSs), research collaboration, and policies affecting Indonesia's private higher education sector. The discussion also provided a platform for private university representatives to convey their aspirations directly to the ministry.

Brian emphasized that public and private universities share an equally important role in advancing Indonesia's higher education system. He said closer cooperation among universities is essential to improving academic quality, expanding research, and developing a globally competitive workforce.

"I have always encouraged stronger collaboration between public and private universities. If possible, we should expand joint degree and double degree programs," he said. He noted that academic partnerships would provide broader learning opportunities while strengthening institutional capacity across Indonesia's higher education landscape.

The minister also stressed the importance of collaboration in research, describing it as a key element in building a stronger national research ecosystem. According to him, research partnerships can maximize the use of existing facilities while encouraging innovation across institutions.

"I have consistently emphasized that collaboration is essential. That is why we encourage research funding schemes that require collaboration, and we have also asked public universities to provide research access to nearby institutions so that progress can be achieved together," he conveyed.

Meanwhile, ABPPTSI Chairman Arief presented recommendations and aspirations from private higher education providers regarding the development of Indonesia's higher education ecosystem. The proposals covered a range of strategic issues, including policies affecting the management and sustainability of private universities.

The ministry said the meeting reflected its commitment to strengthening partnerships with higher education stakeholders under its Impactful Higher Education, Science, and Technology agenda. Feedback from ABPPTSI will be considered in shaping future policies aimed at creating a more collaborative, inclusive, and impactful higher education system in Indonesia.
