RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - Indonesia is strengthening the role of its universities as engines of innovation and national development through closer integration of education, research, and community engagement. Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, reaffirmed this commitment during a working visit to Diponegoro University (Undip) in Semarang, Central Java, on Monday July 27, 2026.

Meeting with the university's leadership, Brian encouraged Indonesia's academic community to pursue ambitious goals in advancing the nation through science and technology. He emphasized that meaningful progress requires not only knowledge and innovation but also perseverance, hard work, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose.

"A great nation is one that has great aspirations. We want Indonesia to become a prosperous country, and we must lead that progress through science and technology," Brian said. He stressed that universities play a strategic role in shaping the country's future by producing knowledge and solutions that address national challenges.

The minister also introduced the government's Impactful Campus initiative, which encourages higher education institutions to generate tangible benefits for society, industry, and government. Brian also said universities should distinguish themselves as centers of excellence where education, research, and innovation directly contribute to national development.

In addition to strengthening research and innovation, Brian affirmed the importance of ensuring equal access to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. He called on universities to expand financial support through scholarships, tuition assistance, the Indonesia Smart Card for Higher Education (KIP Kuliah), and partnerships with alumni and other funding sources.

During the visit, Brian also inspected Diponegoro University's Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST), which applies scientific research, technology, and multidisciplinary collaboration to support sustainable environmental management. He praised the facility as a model that demonstrates how universities can develop practical solutions to real-world challenges.

"The Integrated Waste Management Facility at Diponegoro University is an example of the kind of facility communities need. Its capacity should be expanded so it can serve more residents and become a model for universities across Indonesia," he said, adding that effective waste management requires collaboration across social sciences, biology, and engineering.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology said the visit reflects its broader effort to encourage universities to become centers of education, research, and innovation that deliver measurable public benefits. Through the Diktisaintek Berdampak initiative, Indonesian universities are expected to produce solutions that not only advance knowledge but also improve people's lives and support sustainable national development.
