RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia continues to improve its higher education innovation ecosystem by expanding intellectual property protection and commercialization efforts across universities. A total of 113 universities under the Higher Education Service Institution (LLDikti) Region III have joined a nationwide initiative to establish Intellectual Property (IP) Centers in collaboration with the Ministry of Law’s regional offices.
Quoting an official statement released on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from LLDikti Region III, the simultaneous cooperation agreement signing was conducted together with the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Law as part of a national program to strengthen intellectual property awareness and patent utilization in universities.
The participation of 113 universities also makes Jakarta the region with the highest number of universities preparing to establish IP Centers, reflecting strong institutional commitment to research innovation and intellectual property protection.
Head of the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, Baroto, stated that intellectual property should be viewed as an important component of Indonesia’s economic development ecosystem. According to him, universities play a central role in ensuring that academic works and innovations do not stop at administrative processes alone.
“Speaking of Intellectual property, it is part of a broader ecosystem where copyright and patent registrations should generate real economic impact for their owners. Universities, as key pillars, should not focus solely on accreditation achievements, but must also develop long-term strategies to transform innovations into economic assets that benefit society,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of LLDikti Region III, Henri Tambunan, emphasized that the establishment of IP Centers is a strategic step to strengthen research and innovation ecosystems within Indonesian universities.
“For us, this is not merely ceremonial. It is the foundation for a healthy research ecosystem. Many innovations from lecturers and students have stopped at the publication stage. Through standardized IP Centers, we can ensure proper patent drafting assistance so research outcomes can be commercialized and legally protected,” Henri explained.
The initiative is also expected to support the downstreaming and commercialization of research products while improving Indonesia’s competitiveness through innovation-driven development.
Through the collaboration, universities are expected to gain stronger institutional support, legal protection, and strategic guidance in managing research and innovation outputs with broader economic and societal impact.
