RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia, together with Austria, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), held the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and Security Concerns related to Nuclear Weapons on Friday, April 17, 2026.
The conference, attended by representatives from more than 20 countries and international organizations, discussed regional and global security challenges related to nuclear weapons, while also encouraging progress toward the universalization and implementation of the TPNW.
Director General for Multilateral Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tri Tharyat, in his opening remarks emphasized that the conference takes place at a crucial moment amid rising nuclear risks due to geopolitical tensions and continued reliance on nuclear deterrence.
“For the Asia-Pacific, nuclear weapons are not a distant threat, but a real and growing security challenge,” Tri Tharyat said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Furthermore, Tri Tharyat stressed that current global security dynamics require a re-evaluation of approaches that remain dependent on nuclear deterrence logic. In this context, the TPNW is seen as an instrument that not only strengthens the global disarmament architecture but also places a humanitarian perspective at the center of building security.
The conference aims to comprehensively reassess perceptions of threats and security risks related to nuclear weapons, as well as to identify steps to promote the implementation and universalization of the TPNW in the Asia-Pacific region. The still limited participation and ratification of the treaty in the region highlights the need for stronger and more inclusive collective efforts.
The conference is considered particularly relevant ahead of the 11th NPT Review Conference later this month and the 1st TPNW Review Conference in late 2026, which are expected to further strengthen global momentum for nuclear disarmament.
Participants also reaffirmed that nuclear weapons pose a catastrophic humanitarian and environmental threat that transcends national borders and generations. Therefore, collective efforts must be strengthened, particularly through reinforcing norms against nuclear weapons.
Indonesia has consistently supported the TPNW since its negotiation in 2017. Through this conference, Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to actively contribute to global nuclear disarmament efforts and to maintaining international peace and security.
