Indonesia Pushes Islamic Study Groups Toward Economic Empowerment

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs promotes expanding the role of Islamic study groups . The initiative highlights their contribution to strengthening religious values and social resilience.

The statement was delivered during the closing of the 4th National Conference of Coordination Body of Mosque-Based Islamic Study Groups of the Indonesian Mosque Council (BKMM DMI) in Jakarta on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Director of Islamic Religious Information, Muchlis M. Hanafi, said study groups play a vital role in society. He noted their importance in delivering relevant and grounded religious outreach.

Before delivering his main statement, he emphasized their broader social function beyond religious gatherings. He highlighted their role in maintaining harmony and strengthening community values.

“Islamic study groups are not merely spaces for religious learning. They are also platforms for community development, maintaining social balance, strengthening religious values, and preserving harmony in society,” he said.

The conference was attended by representatives from 19 regional boards and hundreds of local branches. It served as a national consolidation forum to address challenges in the digital era.

Muchlis stressed the importance of transforming religious outreach in today’s digital landscape. He said study groups must adapt and produce moderate, inclusive, and enlightening religious narratives.

Before delivering his next point, he underlined the need for impactful religious services. He emphasized that outreach must address real needs within communities.

“In the digital era, Islamic study groups are expected not only to receive information but also to create calming and solution-oriented religious content. Religious outreach today must not only touch the mind but also respond to real community needs,” he said.

Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council, Jusuf Kalla, also highlighted the broader role of study groups. He encouraged expanding their function into economic empowerment, including supporting small and micro enterprises among members.
