RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government promotes Nahdliyin literacy through a reading initiative in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The discussion took place during a meeting at the Ministry of Religious Affairs office.
Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, encouraged to foster literacy traditions among Nahdliyin youth, referring to members of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). He underscored studying classical Islamic texts, known as turats, alongside writing practices.
He highlighted that literacy should go beyond reading activities alone. Writing skills must be developed to build a strong intellectual tradition among young generations.
The minister also stressed the importance of language mastery and moral development. Study groups are expected to nurture knowledge and good character among participants.
He then introduced expectations for the Nahdliyin Reading Corner program. The initiative aims to revive engagement with classical Islamic scholarship among youth.
“We hope the Nahdliyin Reading Corner revives the turats tradition among young Nahdliyin. We must strengthen language skills and build noble character through study groups,” he said.
He further underlined that literacy culture affects the quality of younger generations. He noted Indonesia is strong in reading but still weak in writing traditions.
“Pojok Baca Nahdliyin should not only focus on reading, but also on studying and writing, including documenting scholars or clerics who remain less widely known,” he added.
Chairperson of Nahdliyin Reading Corner Arif Budiman Mahdi explained that the program has expanded across various communities. It includes Quran translation into local languages, scholar biographies, and reading corners in 56 locations.
“Pojok Baca Nahdliyin is expected not to depend too much on any party and to maintain its spirit without being involved in political support dynamics,” he said.
