RRI.CO.ID, Ambon - The Pattimura University (Unpatti) in Ambon, Maluku, is set to deepen its academic collaboration with the Netherlands by focusing on student exchange programs, a move aimed at fostering sustainable international cooperation and broadening global perspectives for its students.
“We welcome this visit as a strategic opportunity to strengthen academic and research collaboration, as well as student and faculty exchanges between Maluku and the Netherlands,” Unpatti Rector Freddy Leiwakabessy said in Ambon on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The planned exchange program will allow Unpatti students to pursue short-term studies at Dutch universities while also hosting Dutch students in Ambon to explore Maluku’s rich culture, maritime traditions, and natural resources.
The scheme includes semester- to year-long exchanges, credit recognition, and joint student research projects in areas such as marine science, fisheries, education, and island development.
“This program not only provides international academic experience but also shapes global outlooks and enhances human resource quality in Maluku,” Freddy noted.
Beyond student exchanges, the partnership will extend to faculty exchanges, guest lectures, and joint research initiatives. Unpatti also welcomed plans for a special lecture by the Dutch Ambassador titled “A Conversation with the Ambassador: Connecting the Dots between Maluku and the Netherlands” to broaden students’ global awareness.
Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia Marc Gerritsen emphasized that the cooperation is expected to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in higher education, while opening opportunities for study and collaboration in the Netherlands.
This cooperation will focus on student exchanges and building academic networks, enabling students from both countries to learn from each other and gain global perspectives,” he said.
The exchange program will be supported by scholarships, inter-university partnerships, and international mobility schemes, ensuring students benefit from cross-cultural learning.
Gerritsen also highlighted the importance of direct interaction through guest lectures to help students understand the opportunities and challenges of higher education in a global context.
“We hope students in Ambon can take advantage of this opportunity to broaden their horizons and build international networks,” he concluded.
The initiative reflects the growing role of subnational diplomacy in fostering concrete, results-oriented partnerships. For Unpatti, it marks a significant step toward embedding Maluku’s academic community in global knowledge exchange. ***
