RRI.CO.ID, Batang - To cultivate a stronger culture of literacy, the Batang Regency Administration in Central Java, officially launched the Sak Minggu Sak Buku (One Week, One Book) movement at the Kampung Literasi Pelangi, South Proyonanggan, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The initiative aims to nurture children during their "golden age," focusing not only on intellectual and emotional intelligence but also on developing a critical mindset to face future challenges.

The movement encourages students to read at least one book per week and review its contents at the beginning of the following week. This habit is designed to transition children away from passive consumption toward active, analytical engagement with information.

Kampung Literasi Pelangi was originally a space for residents to explore their potential through informal education, such as Quranic recitations and skill-sharing for mothers. Now, it has evolved into a comprehensive media center for both children and parents.

"We have received assistance of up to 1,000 books from the National Library, Disperpuska, and corporate social responsibility from Nestle," explained Chairperson of Kampung Literasi Pelangi, Herin Setyowati, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

The collection includes children's stories, cookbooks, and various educational resources. Literacy advocate Kurnia Hidayati noted that the benefits of this movement extend beyond human development indices, as they also offer significant financial potential. She explained that habitual reading sparks creative output, generating ideas that can eventually be transformed into marketable products or unique works of art.

These creative efforts can lead to direct economic gain, allowing book lovers to generate tangible profits by producing and selling their own creations. However, to ensure the movement’s success, Kurnia emphasized the critical parental role, saying that parents must actively model reading behavior themselves rather than simply motivating their children to do so.

The regency plans to replicate the Sak Minggu Sak Buku program and the Kampung Literasi model across all 15 districts in Batang.

Mother of literacy Faelasufa Faiz Kurniawan stressed that the program also integrates digital literacy, ensuring children can navigate modern information landscapes safely. To support this growth, Regent M. Faiz Kurniawan has pledged additional funding to the districts showing the most potential, ensuring that the literacy movement remains sustainable and impactful.

The initiative focuses on ensuring that children in their golden age become intellectually and emotionally resilient. By practicing weekly reading habits, students are encouraged to engage in educational activities, group discussions, and digital literacy every day.

The program also aims to bridge the gap between reading and practical skills, showing residents that a strong literacy foundation can lead to creative products and economic opportunities. With the support of both administration funding and private sector book donations, Batang is positioning itself as a regional leader in community-based education. ***
