RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – One of the things Indonesia is best known for around the world is its rich culinary heritage. One example is lontong cap go meh, a dish that combines traditional Indonesian and Chinese flavors.

Lontong cap go meh consists of lontong (elongated rice cakes) served with coconut milk-based gravy and a variety of side dishes. This includes sayur lodeh (chayote-based vegetable soup), chicken, sambal, hard-boiled eggs, and crackers.

At first glance, lontong cap go meh may look similar to dishes such as opor ayam and lontong sayur. One noticeable difference is the wider variety of side dishes served with lontong cap go meh.

This variety is not typically found in opor ayam and lontong sayur, which are served with simpler accompaniments. The combination of different side dishes creates a unique blend of flavors.

Lontong cap go meh is an adaptation of Javanese cuisine by Indonesia’s Peranakan Chinese community. As its name suggests, the dish is traditionally enjoyed by Chinese communities in Java during the Cap Go Meh celebration.

Cap Go Meh (十五暝, cha̍p-gō͘-mê, "15th night") is an Indonesian term derived from Hokkien, referring to the Lantern Festival, a traditional Chinese celebration held on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese calendar. It marks the final day of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Although it was originally served during Cap Go Meh, lontong cap go meh can now be found throughout the year at Chinese restaurants and eateries in or around Chinatown areas in Indonesia. So, you do not have to wait for Cap Go Meh to enjoy this dish.
