RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - The traditional fish‑preservation dish pindang belik took center stage at the Lantung Subdistrict Office grounds during the Pindang Belik Cultural Festival, highlighting local wisdom and culinary heritage from Lantung, Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province.
Originating as a preservation technique born of necessity, pindang belik was developed when inland communities faced multi‑day horseback journeys to reach coastal areas.
The method allowed seafood to remain fresh for extended periods. Over time, it evolved into a celebrated culinary craft alongside other local fish dishes such as sepat, singang, suer, fish floss (abon ikan), padu telu, and rujak pindang.
Local organizers and community leaders designed the festival as an annual tourism centerpiece to boost micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), stimulate grassroots economic activity, and instill cultural pride in younger generations.
The Sumbawa Regency Administration commended the festival as a concrete step toward preserving cultural heritage while advancing the local economy. Regent Syarafuddin Jarot emphasized that the uniqueness of pindang belik is a valuable asset for the region’s identity and tourism appeal.
“Through the Pindang Belik Cultural Festival, we strengthen cultural identity, drive the people’s economy, and create an annual tourism agenda that gains wider recognition,” Jarot said in an official release on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He added that cultural events of this nature carry broader strategic significance.
“A festival is not merely an annual ceremony. It is our way of preserving identity, a space to introduce cultural richness to the younger generation and to the outside world.
