RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has a wide variety of dishes commonly enjoyed to start the day, one of which is chicken porridge. This breakfast menu is popular in many regions and comes in different variations, each reflecting the characteristics of its area of origin.
One type of chicken porridge that is widely recognized by the public is Bubur Ayam Tambun. This dish is commonly found in the Greater Jakarta area and has become a practical breakfast choice before people begin their daily activities.
The name “Tambun” refers to the Tambun area in Bekasi Regency, West Java. Bubur Ayam Tambun is closely associated with traveling vendors who mostly come from the area.
Interestingly, unlike most porridge sellers who use pushcarts, Bubur Ayam Tambun vendors usually sell their food using motorcycles. This selling method allows them to reach residential areas and office complexes more easily during the morning hours.
In general, chicken porridge is a rice-based dish cooked until soft and creamy, then served with shredded chicken and various toppings such as fried dough sticks, crackers, fried shallots, celery, and sweet soy sauce. However, Bubur Ayam Tambun has its own distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other types of chicken porridge.
While chicken porridge is commonly served with broth, Bubur Ayam Tambun is known for being served without it. Instead, it uses a peanut-based chili sauce that creates a savory, spicy, and slightly sweet flavor combination. This unique taste has become one of the main attractions of Bubur Ayam Tambun among culinary enthusiasts.

In addition to the peanut sauce, tongcai is also an iconic topping in Bubur Ayam Tambun. Tongcai is a type of fermented vegetable, usually made from chopped mustard greens or cabbage, with a salty and slightly sour taste. In some variations, tongcai can also be made from ingredients such as radish and mushrooms. Its presence adds a distinctive aroma and texture to the porridge, creating a unique and recognizable flavor combination.
With its distinctive taste and unique serving style, Bubur Ayam Tambun remains one of Indonesia’s traditional culinary dishes that continues to be enjoyed by many people, especially as a practical breakfast option amid the fast-paced urban lifestyle.
