RRI.CO.ID, Ottawa - Indonesia has asserted its "soft power" on the global stage by dominating the prestigious ‘Y Embassy Chef Showcase’ 2026 in Ottawa, Canada. In a vibrant display of gastrodipomacy held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) managed to secure a remarkable hat-trick of top-tier honors, outshining 14 other participating nations.

The Indonesian booth became the highlight of the evening, walking away with three major awards: Best Dressed Booth, Best Beverage, and the highly coveted People’s Choice award. Indonesia also secured the runner-up position for the Judges’ Choice category, trailing only behind Ethiopia and the Philippines in a tightly contested race.

Reflecting on the victory, the Indonesian Ambassador to Canada, Muhsin Syihab, expressed deep pride in the team's performance.

"This demonstrates Indonesia's strength in culinary diplomacy. Furthermore, it demonstrates the power of cultural promotion at the international level," Muhsin said in a written press statement on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

The Indonesian delegation captivated the 500 guests, comprised of the diplomatic corps and local professionals, with an authentic spread of Nusantara delicacies. The menu featured the fragrant nasi kuning (yellow turmeric rice), the iconic beef rendang, and traditional sweets such as kue talam and srikaya Palembang. The booth was widely praised for its immersive atmosphere and impeccable presentation.

The Chair of the Jury, Margaret Dickenson, was glowing in her assessment of the archipelago's presence. “Indonesia became one of the most prominent participants in this year's diplomatic culinary showcase,” she noted, highlighting the consistent quality that led to their multiple wins.

Beyond the competition, the event served a noble purpose as a charity fundraiser for the YMCA programs in the Greater Ottawa region. With tickets priced at 150 CAD, the evening successfully raised over 59,000 CAD for local community initiatives.

By winning the People’s Choice award, decided by a direct vote from the public, Indonesia has proven that its culinary heritage possesses a unique ability to bridge cultures and capture hearts far beyond its borders.

This sweep by the Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa is a masterclass in strategic cultural branding. By presenting regional specialties like Srikaya Palembang alongside world-famous staples like Rendang, Indonesia is successfully deepening its culinary narrative, moving from "familiar" to "sophisticated."

Winning the People's Choice is particularly vital; it indicates that the Indonesian flavor profile is not just respected by experts, but actively desired by the North American public. This type of cultural resonance creates a lasting "halo effect" that can benefit other sectors, from tourism to the export of packaged Indonesian food products like tempeh and ginger candy, which are already seeing increased demand in the Canadian market.
