RRI.CO.ID, Banjarmasin – Amidst the surge of modern snacks and contemporary culinary trends, lempeng, a signature treat from Banjarmasin, continues to endure and thrive.

This traditional cake, crafted from a base of rice flour and coconut milk, remains a staple favorite, particularly among the people of South Kalimantan.

One seasoned vendor, Wahyudi, who has operated in the Antasari area in Banjarmasin for over a decade, notes that lempeng possesses a simple yet distinct flavor profile that keeps customers coming back.

"Lempeng offers a savory taste with a natural sweetness derived from coconut milk. From the past until now, the demand has never wavered; even the younger generation enjoys it," he remarked on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

Wahyudi still prepares his lempeng using traditional methods, utilizing iron molds over a low flame to ensure a soft texture and a fragrant aroma. On an average day, he processes approximately 5 kilograms of batter.

Beyond its affordable price, lempeng holds significant cultural value for the Banjar community. Wahyudi expressed his hope that traditional delicacies like lempeng will continue to be preserved and cherished by future generations. (Annaila Azzahra/Sri Wahyuni)
