RRI.CO.ID, East Aceh - Timun suri (Indonesian summer cucumber), known locally as Boh Timoen Wah, remains an iconic and refreshing staple for breaking the fast in Aceh. As the month of Ramadan arrives, these unique melons become a ubiquitous sight across local traditional markets.

Kuta Lawah Village, located in the Idi Rayeuk Subdistrict of East Aceh, has served as a central hub for timun suri production during Ramadan for decades. Along the Banda Aceh-Medan national highway, rows of vendors offer the fruit at prices ranging from IDR 5,000 (USD 0.30) to IDR 10,000 (USD 0.59) per piece.

"This timun suri is the local harvest from our farmers. In this region, farmers specifically plant them to be harvested only during the month of Ramadan," said Muhammad Ridha, a local vendor, on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Ridha added that while Kuta Lawah is a primary producer, neighboring villages such as Buket Jok and Buket Linteung also dedicate their land to this seasonal crop. "The timun suri produced here is wrapped in banana stems before being distributed by wholesalers to every corner of Aceh," he explained.

The use of banana stem packaging is a distinctive Acehnese tradition. While timun suri is often sold by weight in other regions, Aceh’s version is sold individually, encased in these natural wrappers. Ridha noted that this method is highly functional for hygiene and preservation.

"When this fruit is fully ripe, it naturally cracks open. The banana stem wrapping prevents dust from entering and ensures the soft interior is not damaged or crushed during transport," added Ridha.

Beyond its cultural significance, timun suri is packed with essential nutrients, including potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin C. Additionally, it contains flavonoids and saponins that help the body fight off flu and infections.

Furthermore, the fruit contains natural glucose and fructose, which are easily absorbed by the body. These natural sugars provide an immediate energy boost, helping fasters regain their stamina and stay fit throughout the holy month. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
