KBRN, Bukittinggi: Teh Talua Malimpah Bang Ucok, a signature tea drink from Bukittinggi, has become a culinary attraction not only for locals but also for visitors from across Indonesia and abroad.
The beverage, known as teh talua or “egg tea,” is made by whisking duck egg yolk and blending it with hot tea, sugar, milk, or cocoa powder. The mixture is served frothy and overflowing, a presentation called malimpah, and has become a favorite despite its unusual combination of tea and egg.
“We have many buyers from overseas, especially Malaysia, and also from Germany and Austria,” said Affandi, the brother of the stall’s owner, on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
Located on Jalan Sutan Syahrir in Aur Birogo Tigo Baleh Subdistrict, in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Bang Ucok’s stall is consistently crowded, with visitor numbers peaking on weekends.
Affandi noted that social media platforms such as TikTok, along with reviews from YouTubers, influencers, and celebrities, have played a major role in spreading the drink’s popularity.
“On a relaxed day, we get 500 customers, but when business is booming, we see up to 6,000 visitors. The word spreads through TikTok or recommendations from friends and relatives who have tried Ucok’s Tea Talua,” he said.

The stall operates daily, from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. local time Sunday through Friday, and until 5 a.m. on Saturdays. Its success has led to branches in Jakarta, Pekanbaru, and Batam. Affandi cautioned customers to beware of imitators.
“There are many copies. The authentic one has Bang Ucok’s picture on the banner,” he affirmed.
Tourists also praise the drink for its unique taste. Aris, a visitor from Jakarta, said he enjoyed Tea Talua Bang Ucok because it avoids the unpleasant eggy smell often associated with egg-based drinks.
“The sweetness is just right. There is no unpleasant eggy smell,” he said.

Affandi explained that the absence of odor is achieved by using high-quality duck eggs and mixing them with milk and other ingredients. Popular variants include ginger tea and Medan milk tea.
Prices remain affordable: Tea Talua Malimpah costs IDR 15,000 (about USD 0.90) per glass, Red Ginger Tea is IDR 10,000 (about USD 0.60), and Medan Milk Tea is IDR 8,000 (about USD 0.48).
Beyond taste, Affandi highlighted the drink’s health benefits.
“Duck eggs are good for stamina. For older people who may feel physically weaker, consuming duck eggs is recommended,” he said. (Annaila Azzahra/Lasti Martina)
