KBRN, Surabaya: Indonesia is famous for its wide variety of sate dishes, but few are as distinctive as Sate Kenul, a legendary culinary specialty from Lumpang Kuwik Village in Jatikalen subdistrict, Nganjuk Regency, East Java.

Known for its unique sweet and spicy flavor profile, Sate Kenul has become a beloved icon of the region’s traditional cuisine.

Unlike conventional sate, which is typically grilled and served with peanut sauce, Sate Kenul features diced goat meat mixed with grated coconut and a rich blend of spices: turmeric, ginger, bird’s eye chili, cumin, garlic, pepper, salt, and coriander.

The seasoned meat is then either grilled or fried until golden brown, depending on the vendor’s style.

Originally made exclusively with goat meat, some sellers now offer a beef alternative to cater to a wider range of tastes.

The dish is traditionally served with Sayur Usik, a savory soup made from goat meat and beef bones simmered with aromatic spices. The combination of tender meat and flavorful broth enhances the complexity of the dish, making it a truly memorable culinary experience.

Sate Kenul is a staple at community celebrations and traditional events, and its reputation has grown beyond local borders. It is now a must-try for culinary enthusiasts visiting Nganjuk.

One of the most popular spots to enjoy this dish is Warung Mbak Ni, located just east of the Lumpang Kuwik Village Hall. The stall is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

With a price of around IDR 20,000 (approximately USD 1.20) per serving, including Sayur Usik, Sate Kenul offers an affordable taste of Nganjuk’s rich culinary heritage.

The dish is especially popular during the month of Ramadan, when its bold flavors and comforting texture make it a sought-after treat. ***
