KBRN, Sabang: Food enthusiasts in Sabang, Aceh Province, are constantly drawn to Ajo's octopus satay due to its enticing smoky aroma, tender octopus pieces, and signature peanut or Padang sauce.
This satay stall stands out as its owner, Ajo, is recognized as one of the pioneers of octopus satay in Sabang. He started selling satay in 1990, but at that time, octopus was not the main dish.
It was only in 2001 that he began preparing octopus as satay, driven by the abundance of octopus caught in Sabang’s waters.
"In the past, octopuses were so abundant that it would have been a waste not to use them. So, we decided to try making satay, and thank God, octopus satay has remained a favorite ever since," said Alif, Ajo's son, who has taken over the business, speaking to RRI on Friday, May 19, 2025.
Ajo’s octopus satay is now well known for its tender texture, free from any fishy odor, and its unique blend of spices, which fully absorb into the meat.
Customers can choose between peanut sauce for a sweet and savory taste or Padang seasoning for a bold, spicy kick.
In addition to octopus satay, Ajo also offers beef, chicken, and offal satay, including tripe and beef tongue. While all ingredients are prepared fresh, the octopus is sourced directly from Sabang’s waters.
"We have a supplier who regularly delivers fresh octopus from Sabang, ensuring the quality remains consistent," Alif explained.
A portion of five skewers of octopus satay, including lontong, is priced at an affordable IDR 25,000 (USD 1.35). Those who want a larger portion can opt for the jumbo serving of ten skewers for IDR 45,000 (USD 2.75) per pack. Other varieties of satay are available for IDR 20,000 (USD 1.22) per pack.
On weekdays, the stall serves thousands of portions, and on weekends, demand can double. It’s no surprise that both locals and tourists flock to this popular spot.
So, when visiting Sabang, travelers can enjoy more than just its beaches and maritime attractions. They can also savor Sabang’s signature octopus satay, featuring coal-grilled octopus with a distinct aroma and tender texture. ***
