Ie Bu Puedah, Delicious Acehnese Dish

KBRN, Sabang: Ie bu peudah which translates to 'spicy rice water', is a traditional Acehnese culinary dish typically enjoyed during the month of Ramadan.
A type of rice porridge that is heavily seasoned with spices and leaves, featuring a fresh and slightly spicy taste. This culinary dish is quite unique and has a taste that is rarely found in other areas.
Muhammad Zaini, one of the sellers of ie bu peudah from Gampong Keuramat Indah Ie Meulee, Sukajaya Subdistrict, Sabang City, mentioned that he has been selling Ie bu peudah for a long time. He uses family recipes passed down through generations.
"I sell this only during the Ramadan month because more people buy and order it, even some mosques order from me for breaking the fast together at the mosque," he told RRI, Sunday, March 16, 2025, quoted by rri.co.id.
According to Zaini, the main ingredients for making ie bu peudah consist of 44 types of spices and leaves such as pepper, ginger, turmeric, and coriander that are finely ground. He ordered the spices from outside Sabang City.
Meanwhile, the complementary ingredients are not hard to find, including rice, unripe bananas, unripe coconuts, peanuts, green beans, unripe corn, sweet potatoes, papaya leaves and flowers, along with several other types of leaves.
He explained how to make ie bu pundah. The initial step is to mix the pounded spices with rice, green beans, and peanuts, then boil until they are tender and fully cooked.
Once cooked, add the various vegetables, add flavoring or seasoning, cook again until all the ingredients are perfectly cooked. Zaini sells ie bu pundah for IDR 10,000 per pack.
Aunt Iyan, a housewife from Gampong Cot Ba'u, Sukajaya District, said that every fasting month she always provides a menu of ie bu peudah in her family.
"I really like this ie bu peudah. Every fasting month I always consume it, because it tastes good, refreshing for the body and also promotes health since many vegetables are included, basically it's delicious," she said.
Ie bu peudah is part of rich cultural heritage and is considered as beneficial for health because it contains various spices and leaves that can aid in boosting the immune system. And the way it is served it is adjusted to each person's taste. ***
