Fish Processing Industry Boosts Jobs in Southeast Sulawesi

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Beyond its growing export numbers, the fisheries sector in Southeast Sulawesi is increasingly recognized for its role in creating jobs and strengthening local livelihoods.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported that fishery exports from the province reached 738 tons worth IDR 171 billion (USD 9.70 million) by mid‑2026, but the impact extends well beyond trade.

Head of the Kendari Quality Control Center, Muhammad Zamrud, said there are currently 15 export‑oriented fish processing units (UPI) operating in Southest Sulawesi.

Together, they employ 1,249 workers -- 468 men and 781 women -- providing steady income opportunities for local communities. This workforce reflects how fisheries are not only an economic driver but also a source of inclusive employment.

Acting Head of the KKP’s Quality Control Agency, Ishartini, noted that certified exports have consistently supported the province's economy, contributing 2,200 tons valued at IDR 313 billion in 2025.

Key commodities such as tuna, octopus, mackerel, and crab are shipped to markets in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Australia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.

To meet international standards, KKP provides guidance for 17 types of fishery products, covering practices such as Good Aquaculture (CBIB), Good Handling on Vessels (CPIB Kapal), Processing Feasibility Certificates (SKP), and HACCP compliance.

“Fast, online certification services from upstream to downstream have helped Southeast Sulawesi's products gain wider acceptance abroad," she said in an official statement, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

KKP continues to push for quality assurance across the supply chain, aiming to enhance competitiveness while ensuring that the benefits of fisheries are felt locally.
