BPS Reports 0.21 Percent Monthly Inflation in August 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that monthly inflation in August 2026 stood at 0.21 percent month‑to‑month (mtm). The Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 111.97, up from 111.73 in the previous month.

“Annual inflation in August 2026 reached 3.19 percent year‑on‑year (yoy), while calendar‑year inflation (January–August) 2026 stood at 1.86 percent year‑to‑date (ytd),” said BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Ateng Hartono, in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

The expenditure group contributing most to monthly inflation was food, beverages, and tobacco, which recorded inflation of 0.57 percent (mtm) and contributed 0.17 percentage points.

“The commodities that primarily drove inflation were broiler chicken, bird’s eye chili, fresh fish, and rice, followed by long beans, green beans, sweet corn, cucumbers, watermelons, machine‑rolled kretek cigarettes, and machine‑rolled white cigarettes,” Ateng said.

The personal care group contributed 0.03 percentage points, with an inflation rate of 0.37 percent (mtm). “This was mainly driven by a 0.75 percent increase in the price of gold jewelry,” he added.

Meanwhile, the transportation group experienced deflation of 0.50 percent (mtm) in August, driven primarily by declines in airfare and gasoline prices.

Based on inflation components, core inflation and volatile prices recorded increases of 0.21 percent and 0.88 percent, respectively. Government-regulated prices fell by 0.33 percent.

In August, 27 provinces recorded inflation, while 11 provinces experienced deflation. The highest inflation was in the Bangka Belitung Islands at 0.81 percent, while the lowest deflation was in Papua Highland at minus 1.27 percent. (Gusti Panji)
