RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Chicken prices have increased significantly recently. In Medan, North Sumatra, the price reached 50,000 Rupiah per kilogram this weekend.

This high price affects the Free Nutritious Meal program. Program kitchens are starting to remove chicken from their menus.

Suppliers noticed the kitchens are shifting to beef instead. Many program kitchens want to replace chicken as the main protein.

This shift will likely increase demand for other proteins. The program kitchens might buy more eggs, beef, tofu, or fish.

Consequently, the prices of these alternative foods may rise. This situation could trigger broader inflation across the region.

Chicken is a crucial part of the daily nutrition program. Shifting demand to other foods will not lower chicken prices.

This is because chicken production costs are also rising. To address this issue, the government must lower upstream production costs.
