  • Currency in Circulation (UYD) also grew 15.10 percent (yoy) to IDR 1,314 trillion amid rapid digital payment expansion.

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) reported that digital transaction volume reached 5.50 billion in July 2026, an increase of 28.69 percent year-on-year (yoy). The growth was driven by wider acceptance of digital payments across various platforms.

Internet banking transactions grew by 9.39 percent (yoy), while mobile app transactions rose by 24.25 percent.

“Digital economic and financial transactions in July 2026 continued to grow, supported by a secure, smooth, and reliable payment system, as well as stable infrastructure and a healthy industry structure,” said Acting BI Governor Destry Damayanti during an online press conference following BI’s Board of Governors Meeting (RDG) on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The strongest performance came from the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS).

QRIS transaction volume surged 82.42 percent (yoy), driven by rising numbers of users and merchants. BI said this growth reinforces QRIS’s role in the national payment ecosystem and supports Indonesia’s digital economic and financial transformation.

In terms of infrastructure, retail transactions via BI-FAST reached 546 million, up 31.62 percent (yoy), with a transaction value of IDR 1,355 trillion (approximately USD 76.24 billion).

High-value transactions via BI-Real Time Gross Settlement (BI-RTGS) reached 0.99 million, an increase of 3.12 percent (yoy). The value of BI-RTGS transactions rose 1.54 percent to IDR 20,097 trillion.

Despite rapid digitalization, cash usage continues to grow. Currency in Circulation (UYD) increased by 15.10 percent (yoy) to IDR 1,314 trillion in July.

BI Deputy Governor Ricky Perdana Gozali emphasized that digital payments do not replace physical currency. “Digital and physical rupiah, whether in physical or economic terms, are not substitutes for one another, but rather complementary,” Ricky said.

He noted that BI will continue developing digital payments and physical rupiah simultaneously to provide the public with transaction options suited to their needs.

Physical currency use continues to rise, although its growth has begun to flatten amid widespread digitalization. To strengthen public understanding of the rupiah’s role, BI is intensifying its Cinta, Bangga, Paham Rupiah (Love, Pride, Understand Rupiah) campaign.

“Through ‘Bangga Rupiah’, we recognize the rupiah as a symbol of sovereignty, a legal tender, and a unifying force for the nation. Meanwhile, ‘Paham Rupiah’ emphasizes spending wisely, using the rupiah responsibly, understanding how to conduct transactions, and practicing frugality,” said Ricky. ***
