RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Creative Economy said the "Malam Merdeka" or Night of Freedom is designed to support the people's economy. Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, delivered the statement during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, August 17, 2026.

He said the celebration connects independence with economic opportunities. The program involves creative talents and small businesses across several activities.

“We designed this entire series to invite people to commemorate independence with a spirit of togetherness without barriers, cross-institutional synergy, for one day together that has an impact on the people's economy,” he said.

The Night of Freedom involves creative talents from design, fashion, culinary, music, performing arts, digital content, and emerging technology. The activities are spread from the National Monument (Monas) to the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, combining creativity, technology, and public participation.

Minister Riefky said the Monas area also provides space for micro, small, and medium enterprises, or MSMEs. Around 600 stalls are prepared, with each stall accommodating two MSMEs, according to the minister.

“For the MSMEs, there are 600 counters, with one counter or one tent accommodating two MSMEs. There is also a playground prepared by the Ministry of Tourism, designed for 600,000 people in the Monas area alone,” he said.

The event also features 32 decorated vehicles involving creative workers from various subsectors. Riefky said the broader production process could involve tens of thousands of creative workers beyond those directly participating.

The Night of Freedom includes immersive installations, video mapping, a decorated vehicle carnival, and a drone show. The activities are part of Indonesia's 81st Independence Day celebrations and aim to bring creative industries closer to the public.
