Indonesia Marks Independence Anniversary with Rice Export to Malaysia

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s achievement of rice self-sufficiency has opened a new chapter in its agricultural diplomacy. To celebrate the nation’s 81st Independence Day, the government announced the export of 1,000 tons of premium rice to Malaysia, signaling that domestic production is now strong enough to serve international markets.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman described the shipment as both symbolic and strategic. “Going forward, we are not only pursuing an increase in the number of placements, but also the quality of placements,” he said after witnessing the signing of the export agreement between Perum Bulog and Malaysia’s Padi dan Beras Borneo Sdn Bhd in Jakarta on Friday evening, August 14, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Minister Amran emphasized that the export reflects Indonesia’s surplus capacity. “We have already achieved rice self-sufficiency, with stocks reaching 5.2 million tons as of today. In fact, we have rented additional warehouses because we are in surplus by 2 million tons,” he explained.

The initial shipment of 1,000 tons is expected to grow to 200,000 tons annually to meet demand in Sarawak, where rice consumption alone reaches that figure.

He noted that Malaysia has welcomed the cooperation. “We just spoke with Malaysia’s Agriculture Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. He expressed appreciation and said he would accelerate and expand rice imports from Indonesia to Malaysia,” Minister Amran said.

From an economic perspective, the agreed price of 3.9 Malaysian Ringgit (USD 0.95) per kilogram means that potential exports of 200,000 tons could generate trade worth approximately IDR 3.39 trillion (USD 190.15 million). Yet Minister Amran stressed that the initiative is not only about trade.

“The opening of export markets is not just about business between countries, but also about improving farmers’ welfare. The rice we export is guaranteed to be of good quality,” he affirmed.

He also expressed gratitude to those who contributed to strengthening national food production. “This is not my work alone, but our collective effort as a nation. Thank you also to the President, who supported all of this through his policies, enabling us to make it happen today,” he added.

For Malaysia, the first shipment is seen as both promotion and partnership. “The first 1,000 tons is a promotional step to introduce Indonesian rice to Sarawak and Malaysia," said General Manager Jumaat bin Ibrahim of Padi dan Beras Borneo Sdn Bhd.

He added that the cooperation is more than commercial. “It is not only business, but also a way to strengthen ties between our peoples,” he concluded.

The rice will be delivered via the Entikong border in West Kalimantan, symbolizing the geographic closeness of Sarawak and Kalimantan. With this inaugural shipment, Indonesia and Malaysia have opened a new era of rice trade, one that underscores Indonesia’s ability to meet domestic needs while expanding its role in regional food security. ***
