Govt Encourages Blockchain to Strengthen IP Commercialization

RI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Blockchain technology is opening new opportunities for stakeholders in Indonesia’s creative economy, with its application expected to strengthen the value and commercialization of intellectual property (IP).

Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, said blockchain can enhance IP management, from licensing to financing. The technology also has the potential to support IP tokenization and the development of real‑world assets for creative economy products.

“However, one principle must be upheld: innovation must go hand in hand with legal certainty and consumer protection,” Minister Riefky said during Indonesia Blockchain Week 2026 in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He emphasized that digital transformation must generate new economic opportunities, increase productivity, and deliver tangible benefits to the public. Indonesia, he added, has strong assets to support this development, including a large market, creative talent, cultural wealth, IP, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Tokenization is the process of converting rights or ownership of assets -- including IP -- into digital representations on a blockchain. In the creative economy, this mechanism can help systematically record ownership, licensing, and economic rights for creative works.

To advance this effort, the Ministry is promoting collaboration with industry players and the blockchain community through talent capacity‑building and training. The government is also gathering input to develop regulations that can support the growth of the national blockchain ecosystem.

Minister Riefky encouraged more Indonesian founders, developers, creators, and entrepreneurs to build technology‑based solutions that can compete globally. “We don’t want Indonesia to be merely a market, but we want Indonesia to be a builder,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is strengthening the IP valuation ecosystem by introducing 64 IP valuators and IP appraisers. This initiative aims to improve valuation processes and create opportunities for the commercialization of creative assets.

The Ministry is also collaborating with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to develop IP‑based Web3 solutions. The partnership is expected to link IP assets with the financial sector, creating a new source of financing for players in the creative economy. ***
