Govt Restores Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant to Optimize 1,100 MW of Energy

RRI.CO.ID, North Tapanuli – The Indonesian government is accelerating the restoration of the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant in North Tapanuli to support the global transition to green energy. This strategic move aims to optimize the region’s clean energy potential, which stands at 1,100 megawatts (MW).
The restoration effort involves securing an investment of approximately USD 270 million to restore the plant’s installed capacity of 330 MW by 2027–2028. As reported in the written press release, Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot, stated that the administrative process is targeted for completion by October 2026.
“First, from an administrative standpoint, we will finalize everything by October 2026. Once the administrative matters are settled, we will focus on increasing production capacity in 2027–2028,” he said at the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant in North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, on Friday, July 31, 2026.
This new capital injection is essential to repair the steam production system, which had experienced a drop in technical pressure. This additional funding is projected to boost the power plant’s performance back to its maximum capacity.
He explained, “We need an additional investment of approximately 270 million US to restore capacity to 330 MW out of the existing potential of 1,100 MW.”
The current drop in field vapor pressure has caused the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant’s production capacity to fall to 220 MW. The Sarulla Operations Ltd. (SOL) consortium and the government are continuing to coordinate efforts to address this operational challenge.
The power plant, which has been in operation since 2017, is one of the largest renewable energy assets in Indonesia. The restoration of this facility is expected to strengthen the supply of environmentally friendly electricity in the Sumatra region.
