RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The transformation of Indonesia’s digital payment system continues to accelerate, with Bank Indonesia (BI) expanding the implementation of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) Cross Border to facilitate transnational transactions and support the growth of the digital economy.
The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with payment system providers, including PT Finnet Indonesia.
PT Finnet Indonesia, a subsidiary of state-owned telecommunication company Telkom Indonesia, provides digital payment services and infrastructure, supporting the expansion of QRIS and other payment innovations.
The expansion of QRIS aims to strengthen international payment connectivity and broaden access to digital transactions for the public and businesses.
“The development of QRIS has been quite massive. We now have cross-border QRIS, and the latest addition is QRIS Tap, which uses NFC technology for payments,” said Assistant Director and Senior Economist at BI’s Department of Payment System Policy (DKSP), Willy Togi, in Surabaya, East Java, on Monday, July 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
According to Willy, QRIS Cross Border services are now available in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and China. The service makes it easier for foreign tourists to conduct digital transactions while expanding opportunities for MSMEs to accept overseas payments.
“Now, with simply printing a QR code, foreign tourists can make digital payments,” Willy said.
Meanwhile, Anton Daryono, Director of Technology, Product & Operations and Acting Director of Finance & Risk Management at PT Finnet Indonesia, emphasized that Finnet continues to support the strengthening of the digital payment ecosystem. Finnet serves as an issuer, acquirer, and payment gateway, aligned with industry needs and BI policies.
“We expect digitalization in Indonesia to become more inclusive, faster, easier, more affordable, as well as secure and reliable,” Anton said.
He added that Finnet continues to introduce features to support merchants -- such as transaction notifications and Soundbox -- to enhance convenience and security. The use of QRIS also helps MSMEs reduce reliance on cash and minimize transaction risks.
“There’s no risk of counterfeit money, and there’s no risk of being robbed because all transactions are digitally recorded,” Anton said. ***
