RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is accelerating the use of bioethanol as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on fuel imports.

State-owned oil and gas company Pertamina said it has prepared infrastructure to support bioethanol blending programs ranging from E5 to E20, aimed at strengthening national energy security.

“Pertamina has prepared blending infrastructure, fuel terminals, and distribution facilities,” Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communications, Muhammad Baron, said in Jakarta on Thursday, June 26, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He added that PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has begun distributing Pertamax Green 95 at 177 gas stations (SPBU) across Java.

Baron explained that Pertamina is ready to implement the government’s policy to expand bioethanol use. Pertamax Green 95 is produced from a blend of Pertamax and five percent sugarcane-based bioethanol, or E5.

“Pertamina also ensures that every product it markets meets the quality standards and specifications set by the government, so that it can be distributed safely and reliably,” he said.

Separately, Pertamina Deputy President Director, Oki Muraza, stated that the company is building a bioethanol development facility in Glenmore, Banyuwangi, East Java, with a production capacity of up to 30,000 kiloliters per year.

The government’s E10 program is part of efforts to reduce gasoline imports and enhance energy security. President Prabowo Subianto has also announced plans to build 30 to 50 ethanol plants to expand production of ethanol-blended fuel.

President Prabowo pointed to India’s success in implementing E20 and Brazil’s achievement of E100 as benchmarks for Indonesia. The government is optimistic that bioethanol blends up to E20 can be gradually realized. ***
