Indonesia’s Trade Surplus Holds Strong Through May 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded a USD 4.03 billion trade surplus for Indonesia from January to May 2026. Despite a deficit in May due to higher imports, foreign trade remained positive in the first five months of the year.

BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Ateng Hartono, said the surplus was supported by exports worth USD 115.36 billion, while imports reached USD 111.33 billion.

“The cumulative export value rose 3.02 percent year-on-year, with the manufacturing sector contributing the largest share at 5.38 percent,” Ateng said at a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Meanwhile, cumulative imports from January to May increased by 15.24 percent compared to the same period last year, driven mainly by raw materials and auxiliary goods, which accounted for 10.35 percent.

In May 2026, Indonesia posted a trade deficit of USD 1.61 billion. Exports that month were recorded at USD 23.20 billion, while imports reached USD 24.81 billion.

According to Ateng, the export value in May 2026 fell by 5.73 percent year-on-year, while imports surged by 22.16 percent, resulting in a monthly deficit. ***
