RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry continues to strengthen international cooperation networks to support national industrial transformation. It is done through a bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Russia on the sidelines of the BRICS Forum on Partnership on New Industrial Revolution (PartNIR) Forum 2026 in Xiamen, China.
The meeting served as a strategic opportunity for both countries to expand collaboration in industry, trade, investment, and the development of future industrial technologies.
Indonesia and Russia have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with 2026 marking the 76th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Following Indonesia’s accession to BRICS, cooperation with member countries, including Russia, has become increasingly important in strengthening national economic and industrial resilience amid evolving global dynamics.
“The BRICS PartNIR Forum is very important for us. We highly appreciate the Russian Government’s support for Indonesia’s BRICS membership and are very interested in hearing perspectives on the future direction of industrial cooperation within the BRICS framework,” Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, conveyed in a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
The Minister noted that Indonesia’s BRICS membership is a strategic step toward expanding economic and industrial collaboration with potential partner countries.
The BRICS PartNIR Forum provides a platform for member countries to strengthen cooperation in emerging industries, technological innovation, industrial downstreaming, and the development of more resilient and inclusive global supply chains. During the bilateral meeting, Indonesia and Russia explored mutually beneficial opportunities to enhance industrial cooperation, particularly in strategic sectors with strong development potential.
Representing Indonesia, Director General of Industrial Resilience, Regional Development, and International Industrial Access (KPAII) Tri Supondy, accompanied by Acting Director of International Industrial Access Binoni A. Napitupulu, met with Andrei Gorobets, Counsellor of the Russian Trade Mission in China, to discuss various opportunities for strengthening industrial cooperation between the two countries.
Tri affirmed that stronger communication and international partnerships are essential for opening market access, expanding industrial networks, and fostering industrial collaboration that is adaptive to global technological developments.
“Indonesia-Russia synergy is also expected to create concrete cooperation opportunities that generate added value for the industrial development of both countries,” he said.
From a trade perspective, economic relations between Indonesia and Russia continue to show positive growth. Bilateral non-oil and gas trade reached approximately USD1 billion in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 1.13 percent compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s exports to Russia totaled USD3.3 billion in 2024, representing significant growth of 13.38 percent year-on-year.
Indonesia’s key exports to Russia include rubber products, coffee, cocoa and tea, footwear, electronic components, and chemical products.
The bilateral meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss broader collaboration within the BRICS framework, particularly ahead of China’s upcoming BRICS presidency. Indonesia hopes to leverage this momentum to further increase industrial and investment cooperation among BRICS member countries.
In addition, Indonesia invited Russia to encourage greater participation from Chinese businesses and investors at INNOPROM 2026, where Indonesia will serve as the Partner Country. The presence of Chinese industrial players is expected not only to strengthen business networks at the event but also to create new cooperation and investment opportunities in Indonesia.
Indonesia also welcomed progress on the Indonesia–Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (I-EAEU FTA), signed in December 2025 in Saint Petersburg. The agreement is expected to expand market access and increase trade and investment flows between Indonesia and members of the Eurasian Economic Union, including Russia.
During the meeting, Indonesia reaffirmed its participation as Partner Country at INNOPROM 2026, scheduled to take place from July 6–9, 2026, in Yekaterinburg. Indonesia’s participation is viewed as a strategic step to strengthen the promotion of its manufacturing industry in the Eurasian region while opening broader industrial cooperation and investment opportunities.
Tri expressed optimism that stronger bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia through the BRICS PartNIR Forum 2026 would further deepen cooperation in building modern, competitive, and globally oriented industries.
“Through strengthened synergy, Indonesia hopes to expand its role as an important part of the global industrial supply chain while reinforcing its position as an investment destination and a global manufacturing production base,” he said.
