RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Indonesia has begun strengthening the readiness of its national industry to face the wave of global green regulations, particularly from the European Union, by implementing the ISO 59000 Series circular economy standards. To support this initiative, the National Standardization Agency (BSN) hosted a webinar titled "National Awareness on the Implementation of SNI ISO 59000 Series" held online on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
Hans Kröder, an International Expert from the ISO Technical Committee 323 on Circular Economy, stated that these standards can help companies comply with various new regulations implemented by the European Union regarding the circular economy and product sustainability. He added that many Asian countries have questioned the impact of EU regulations on their export market access during ISO-facilitated circular economy training programs.
"ISO standards will help you to fulfill these legislations. So this can be also very interesting for the Indonesia companies," he said during the webinar.
According to him, new EU regulations, ranging from the Circular Economy Act to new packaging rules, are certain to affect companies exporting to the region. These strict policies mandate major adjustments for all products entering the European market.
Kröder explained that the ISO 59000 standards exist to provide guidance for companies in developing appropriate circular business models. Furthermore, these international standards help measure circularity performance while ensuring the traceability of production materials.
Moreover, in tandem with these efforts, the Indonesian government, through the National Standardization Agency (BSN), is committed to preserving the planet through a circular economy approach based on international standards. Through the Standard for Sustainability (S4S) program, regional capacity building will focus on strengthening circular economy standards. BSN itself has formed a Technical Committee to adopt global standards, such as the ISO 59000 Series, into Indonesian National Standards (SNI).
"This step ensures that Indonesia does not just become a spectator, but actively helps guide the direction of the circular economy transformation right from its initial formulation," the Head of BSN, Donny Purnomo, said at the same event.
The government hopes that the implementation of these international standards will serve as a tool for Indonesian businesses to meet the demands of the international market, which increasingly prioritizes sustainability and supply chain transparency.
The ISO 59000 Series is a global framework designed to help industrial sectors transition from a linear economic model to a sustainable circular economy system. This suite of international standards includes measurable frameworks, ranging from business model transformation to circularity measurement methodologies, aimed at minimizing waste while helping companies comply with today's global green regulations.
