RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The rupiah’s depreciation against the US dollar is becoming increasingly difficult to contain. Bloomberg data showed the currency plunging 0.36 percent, or 64 points, to IDR 17,903 per US dollar at 9:30 a.m. Jakarta time on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

“The rupiah is still struggling to appreciate. Its strength at the beginning of June remains fragile,” said Mirae Asset Sekuritas economist Rully Arya Wisnubroto in Jakarta, on Wednesday.

He noted that the exchange rate remains vulnerable to a reversal of foreign capital flows and new pressures in the foreign exchange market. On Tuesday, June 2, foreign outflows from the stock market were significant, totaling IDR 1.37 trillion.

Meanwhile, Valbury Sekuritas currency analyst Fikri C. Permana predicted a slight appreciation of the rupiah, citing several positive sentiments that could support its strengthening.

“For example, US President Donald Trump’s statement that Israel and Hezbollah will cease mutual attacks,” he said. However, Fikri added that Iran has declared it has halted negotiations with the US.

Tehran instead demanded a halt to attacks in Gaza and Lebanon as a condition for resuming talks with Washington, a demand the US finds difficult to accept, reigniting uncertainty in the Middle East.

At the same time, the yield on 10-year US Treasury bonds fell to 4.44 percent from 4.68 percent, driven by hopes of a peace agreement with Iran, though conditions remain far from ideal.

Domestically, Indonesia’s trade balance continued to record a surplus through April 2026, although the value has steadily declined. The country has maintained a trade surplus for 72 consecutive months since May 2020. (Gusti Panji)
