RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Investment opportunities from Eastern Europe are increasingly opening up for Indonesia, with the Batang Industropolis Special Economic Zone (SEZ) successfully attracting Hungarian companies to develop green energy projects.

This commitment was formalized through two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed between PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang (KITB) and Hungarian firms Merlion Tech Ltd and Iconic Energi Kft.

The collaboration focuses on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability, within the framework of the business forum “Indonesia’s New Economic Frontier: Investing in the Batang Integrated Estate and Health Special Economic Zone” held in Budapest, Hungary.

“On the journey toward Golden Indonesia 2045, we invite the international business community not only to witness Indonesia’s transformation but also to be part of that journey,” said Acting Secretary General of the National Council for SEZs, Rizal Edwin Manansang, in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Edwin noted that Indonesia and Hungary have significant opportunities to strengthen their strategic partnership across health, pharmaceuticals, science, and innovation.

He highlighted Hungary’s strengths as a pharmaceutical research hub in Central and Eastern Europe, which can be combined with Indonesia’s vast market and robust investment infrastructure.

At the forum, Batang Industropolis SEZ CEO Agung Putu Ngurah Wirawan presented the zone’s achievements, including securing investments totaling USD 1.3 billion and creating approximately 11,000 direct jobs.

Agung revealed that land sales in the Batang Industropolis SEZ reached 104 hectares in 2024 and 97 hectares in 2025, far exceeding the average annual land sales in industrial zones, which typically range from 15 to 20 hectares. “This demonstrates the high level of investor confidence in the potential and competitiveness of the Batang Industropolis SEZ,” he said.

The government also introduced several health-sector SEZs to Hungarian business representatives, including the Sanur SEZ, the Batam International Tourism and Health SEZ, and the Banten International Education, Technology, and Health SEZ.

Discussions covered opportunities for cooperation in water management, industrial water recycling, worker housing development, and joint financing schemes for strategic projects.

On May 20, before the forum, the Indonesian delegation met with the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA), the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI), and the Hungarian Water Partnership.

During the meeting, the Hungarian side expressed interest in water management, green energy, digital technology, and smart cities. It proposed designating the Batang Industropolis SEZ as a pilot project for Hungarian water treatment technology in Indonesia.

This series of promotional activities is seen as strengthening Indonesia’s economic diplomacy in Central and Eastern Europe. The government will subsequently accelerate business matching initiatives, investor visits, and discussions on investment implementation and technology transfer. **
