BPS Reports Significant Inflation Rise in May 2026

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded a notable increase in inflation during May 2026.

On a monthly basis, inflation stood at 0.28 percent, up from 0.13 percent in April. Year-on-year, May inflation reached 3.08 percent, rising from 2.42 percent the previous month.

Meanwhile, calendar-year inflation was reported at 1.35 percent.

Deputy for Statistical Methodology and Information at BPS, Pudji Ismartini, explained that the May increase was driven primarily by the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco group, contributing 0.12 percent to inflation.

Transportation contributed 0.07 percent, while Information, Communication, and Financial Services added 0.03 percent.

“The main food commodities pushing inflation were red chili, which contributed the largest share at 0.08 percent, followed by cooking oil, shallots, tomatoes, and rice,” Pudji said on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

In contrast, broiler eggs and gold jewelry recorded deflationary effects. Other contributors to inflation included household fuel, gasoline, and air transport fares.

By component, core inflation was 0.22 percent, contributing 0.14 percent overall. Key drivers included cooking oil, mobile phones, laptops/notebooks, and rice with side dishes.

Administered prices rose 0.52 percent, contributing 0.10 percent, while volatile food prices increased 0.22 percent, contributing 0.04 percent.

Regionally, 31 provinces experienced inflation in May, while 7 recorded deflation. “Maluku posted the highest inflation at 0.93 percent, while Gorontalo saw the deepest deflation at -0.96 percent,” Pudji concluded. (Gusti Panji)
