RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta —The Indonesia's Trade Minister, Budi Santoso, is encouraging economic growth through hobbyist community activities, which he believes have a multiplier effect on society. He made this statement at the opening of the Bird Singing Competition and MSME Culinary Festival at the Ministry of Trade Office in Jakarta on Sunday, May 3, 2026.

The event was held independently, or non-APBN (State Budget)-funded. The event was initiated by the Indonesian Bird Conservationists (PBI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade's Bird Singing Community.

He stated that the more bird singing competitions there are, the greater the economic opportunities created. The impact can be felt by bird breeders, cage makers, food producers, cricket farmers, and bird sellers.

"We are encouraging increased economic value from various hobbyist communities, one of which is the bird singing community," said Budi Santoso, as quoted in an official statement.

Budi emphasized that the birds competing are captive-bred, not wild-caught. He believes this activity is also part of efforts to promote environmental conservation.

The economic value of the domestic songbird ecosystem is estimated at IDR 1.7 trillion to IDR 2 trillion per year. This ecosystem includes breeding, feed, supplements, accessories, training services, care, and community activities.

Meanwhile, ornamental bird exports in 2025 reached approximately IDR 12.5 billion, a 237.5 percent increase compared to the previous year. In addition to opening the competition, Budi also visited the MSME tent, which showcased various culinary products, regional specialties, drinks, and supporting products for bird lovers.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Bird Watching Association (PBI), Bagiya Rahmadi, stated that the songbird community is not only engaged in buying and selling and competitions, but also in conservation through the development of breeders. "Bird competitions can promote products, and the impact is multifaceted," Bagiya conveyed.
