RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta – The Center for Food Technology and Process Research (PRTPP) of National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), continuously promotes food innovation using local commodities. One of its latest breakthroughs is transforming Gamindo B oranges into fruit leather.
This product was created as a healthy, high-vitamin-C food and a solution to boost the selling price of national agricultural produce. The Gamindo B orange itself is a superior variety of the Nagami (kumquat) orange, native to Indonesia.
This fruit is unique because of its small size and edible peel, which has a distinctive sweet-and-sour taste. Unfortunately, until now, these oranges have only been consumed fresh or processed in simple ways, resulting in low economic value.
To address this challenge, PRTPP BRIN processes all parts of the fruit—except the seeds—into a practical food product. This innovation not only extends the fruit’s shelf life but also creates a distinct texture and a flavor more appealing to consumers.
“This invention is designed to optimize the utilization of the Gamindo B orange in its entirety while producing a practical, nutritious, and higher-value light food product,” PRTPP BRIN researcher Imro’ah Ikarini said, as quoted from a BRIN press release on Monday, April 13, 2026.
According to the research findings, the vitamin C content in these fruit leather is nearly the same as that of fresh oranges. Additionally, this product contains 51.72% antioxidants and natural fiber, which are beneficial for the body.
These nutrients make this food highly beneficial for maintaining health and combating free radicals. Even more impressive, this innovation utilizes relatively simple technology, making it easy for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to replicate.
With this product, it is hoped that BRIN’s research findings can soon be marketed on a broader scale to improve the well-being of the community and local farmers.
