RRI.CO.ID, Rome - Indonesian coffee producer PT ALKO Sumatra Kopi has signed a follow-up contract with Italy’s Best Coffee SRL to export 100 containers of coffee over the next year. The agreement will begin with the shipment of 10 containers in May 2026.

Trade Attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in Rome, Hesty Syntia Paramita Kusmanto, said the collaboration will strengthen Indonesia’s coffee distribution chain to the European Union market. “Both parties are committed to developing the Indonesian coffee market strategically, innovatively, and sustainably,” she said in a statement on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

Hesty added that the value of the trade under this contract is estimated at USD 15 million. “This serves as an example of responsible global trade practices oriented toward sustainability principles,” she noted.

She emphasized that Italy is a major global coffee market with high-quality standards. “The rising demand for specialty coffee opens significant opportunities for expanding exports of Indonesia’s flagship products,” she said.

PT ALKO Sumatra Kopi CEO Suryono Salehan revealed that the company has already completed four initial shipments to Italy. “The latest contract, which includes a commitment to export up to 100 containers, marks a significant milestone in scaling up the partnership,” he said.

Suryono explained that Indonesia’s coffee exports, covering Robusta and Arabica varieties from Sumatra, Java, and Flores, are highly sought after in Europe for their distinctive flavor profiles.

Export varieties include Arabica Dampit, Lintong, Mandailing, Gayo, and Robusta Flores. “We ensure that all these products meet the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR),” he added.

Best Coffee SRL CEO Emilio Galeandro said the partnership is more than a commercial transaction, describing it as an investment in building an ecosystem that upholds producers’ values and safeguards raw materials through advanced digital traceability. “We are committed to shaping a future where product excellence and ethical practices coexist in perfect harmony,” he said.

Total trade between Indonesia and Italy in January–February 2026 reached USD 701.3 million, with Indonesia recording a surplus of USD 164.8 million. In 2025, total trade between the two countries amounted to USD 4.59 billion, with Indonesia’s exports to Italy at USD 2.83 billion and imports from Italy at USD 1.76 billion.
