RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that national sugar production reached 2.67 million tons in 2025, an increase from 2.47 million tons in 2024 and 2.23 million tons in 2023. BPS Deputy Head Sonny Harry Budi Utomo said the rise was supported by an expansion in harvested sugarcane areas.

“The increase in sugar production in 2025 is driven by the growth in our sugarcane harvest area,” Sonny said during a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Commission VI in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 8, 2025, as quoted by Antara.

The harvested area expanded to 563,000 hectares in 2025, up from 521,000 hectares in 2024. Major producing provinces include East Java, Lampung, Central Java, South Sumatra, and West Java. White crystal sugar production followed a similar distribution pattern, contributing to the overall rise in national output.

Household sugar consumption was recorded at around 1.4 million tons, showing a downward trend compared to previous years. Per capita consumption fell to approximately 5.15 kilograms per person annually. Sonny noted that households increasingly consume processed foods from industry and restaurants rather than purchasing sugar directly.

Household consumption accounts for 23.13 percent of total national sugar usage. The food processing industry is the largest consumer at nearly 3.9 million tons, followed by the hotel, restaurant, and catering (HORECA) sector with more than 970,000 tons.

Total national sugar demand in 2025 is projected at 6,330,690 tons. Despite higher production, Indonesia continues to import about 3.93 million tons of sugar, mainly from Brazil, Thailand, and Australia, to meet demand across economic sectors. ***
